FabLab Workshops

Here at Gaelscoil Bhun Cranncha, we are ambitious in developing curriculum opportunities that allow our students to grow advanced technological skills.

In collaboration with Spraoi agus Spórt, who have established a local Inishowen digital fabrication laboratory, we challenged Rang 6 to change their own personal designs and ideas into new products and prototypes. This was achieved through FabLab workshops by giving them access to a range of advanced digital manufacturing technology such as 3-D and industrial printers.

We recognise the importance of providing the environment, skills, advanced materials and technology to ensure our students play an integral role in an ever-evolving technological world. With the support of FabLab workshops, we were able to create a fun environment for learning and innovation.

Here are some photographs and an insight into our learning journey with FabLab:

Vinyl Cutter Machine

The pupils were introduced to the meaning and application of CNC equipment through the use of a vinyl cutter and laptops. Spraoi agus Spórt were able to bring some of the latest emerging technologies into the classroom with some of their more portable Digital Fabrication equipment.

Key ring Design

Building upon digital design skills and applications learnt, the pupils were tasked to setup their personalised design document to the same size as their keyring. Following completion of the design using Inkscape, the students’ final product was printed on an industrial printer.

Mug Design

This session challenged more from the pupil’s own intuition. We approached this task by prompting students to design their own cup. Pupils demonstrated that they are now able to navigate the design user interface with little instruction with an emphasis on sharing the design using a wireless network setup within the classroom. Students were also afforded the opportunity to personally manufacture their own cup using a heat press.

Laser Cut Robot

In this session, we focused on eye to hand coordination. Tasked with modelled pieces of wood students were challenged to first recognise the different parts of the robot, before releasing them from a wooden laser cut kit. The process required a good understanding of how to take 2D shapes and combine them to result in a 3-D finish.

Monkey Maths

Following Paul and Sarah, our lead tutors, on a staged step by step process, the resulting product helped introduce fun to learning times tables. When the monkeys’ feet are positioned on specific digits, its hands co-ordinate to show the correct multiplication answer.

3-D Bookmark

The class created a bookmark using the laser cut piece of polypropylene supplied with vinyl cut stickers. They typed and cut a font and face of their favourite author/book. Using the internet, the pupils used an online design program called Tinkercad. This allowed pupils to experience the world of 3D design whilst using the latest 3D printing technology.

We would like to thank Paul and Sarah for sharing the expertise. Rang a 6 thoroughly enjoyed your support and guidance.
